How to Care for your Jewellery

Jewellery Maintenance

2025 – 02 – 26

At our ring making workshop, we don’t just teach you how to make stunning pieces; we also want to help you care for them. Read on for some simple yet effective tips to care for your jewellery, ensuring that items stay as sparkly as when you first got them.

1. Why Regular Jewellery Cleaning is Important

Dirt and oils that accumulate from everyday wear can dull metals and stones. Regular cleaning not only restores the sparkle of jewellery but also allows you to check for loose settings or stones, keeping your jewelry safe and secure.

2. Cleaning Silver, 18K Gold and Platinum Jewellery at Home:

Polishing Cloth: Use a soft, non-abrasive polishing cloth specifically designed for gold or silver jewelry. Gently rub the cloth over the surface of the silver to remove tarnish and restore shine.

KOBO Jewellery offers these for $5 each. If interested, please inform our instructors at the conclusion of the class.

Mild Soap & Water: Clean your gemstones and diamonds by dipping them into a mixture of warm water and mild dish-washing soap. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the hard to reach areas of your jewellery items. Always rinse thoroughly and dry with a cloth.

Baking Soda Paste: Make a paste by mixing baking soda with water until it forms a thick consistency. Apply the paste to the tarnished areas using a soft cloth or sponge, then gently rub in a circular motion. Rinse with water and dry thoroughly

3. Additional Care Tips:

Storage: Store your jewellery individually in a cool, dry place. We recommend using airtight ziplock bags for each piece to prevent oxidation, scratches, and tangling.

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Keep your jewellery away from harsh chemicals like bleach or chlorine from cleaning products or pools, as they can tarnish metals and damage gemstones.

Protect from Moisture: Remove jewellery before swimming or bathing to avoid tarnishing or discolouration from prolonged exposure to moisture.

Avoid Impact: Protect delicate pieces, especially those set with gemstones, from impact or rough handling. We suggest removing jewellery before doing household chores or exercising at the gym.

By following these care tips, you can help preserve the beauty and longevity of your K18 gold, platinum, and silver pieces for years to come.
